When it comes to investing, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. There are so many funds and services and options, and you’ve only got so much time to research them all. There’s so much uncertainty, so many considerations. How do you choose with confidence and efficiency? We develop your tailored financial plan and sensible, tax-efficient investment strategy. We consult with you on related aspects of your life, so you can build your future from a solid foundation.
Careful, deliberate process. From the granular details to the grand design, Salzman Financial Management, LLC (SFM) uses a distinct, five-phase process for determining, deciding and delivering the right solutions for you. Our process includes: (1) getting to know you, (2) gathering and analysis, (3) planning, (4) implementation, and (5) ongoing care.
A singular focus on what’s important to you. Two key SFM business principles combine to help us deliver the highest standard of quality care to you: (1) Our business model is fee-only, which means we answer only to you, our client. We receive no commissions from outside sources. (2) As a Registered Investment Advisor firm, SFM has accepted a fiduciary level of care, which means we are legally obligated to place your highest interests first. (Besides, it’s the right thing to do.)
Multifaceted expertise. Through the investment know-how of Peter Salzman, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and CPA, we offer advice that is financially sound, and tax- and cost-efficient. After all, it’s not just what you earn that matters, it’s what you get to keep.
Salzman Financial Management, LLC (SFM) offers a deliberate, five-phase process designed to deliver clarity to your financial planning and investment management activities:
Phase I — Getting to know you. It begins with our first contact and ends when we answer the question, “Are we a good fit for each other?” When the answer is yes, we begin exploring in more detail your goals, values, circumstances, expectations and more.
Phase II — Information gathering and analysis. Once we have formed a mutually beneficial business relationship, the real work begins. SFM will develop a thorough understanding of your situation, seeking to identify your most cherished aspirations as well as your greatest challenges.
Phase III — Planning. Based on our Phase II findings, SFM presents logical steps we will take together toward your financial goals. Planning includes investment strategy and also addresses related considerations such as risk management, college and retirement planning, and consultation on estate and tax planning concerns. Based on your input, we’ll review and refine until your plan is in place, and you’re excited about moving forward.
Phase IV — Implementation. Some financial intermediaries help you create a plan, but then execute it with expensive, commission-based products that augment their bottom line at your expense. In stark contrast, SFM builds investment portfolios with low-cost, no-load mutual funds. We also include tax preparation bundled into our client-centric services. We are fee-only, accepting NO commissions from outside sources. Your highest interests are our only incentive, throughout implementation and across the rest of our service phases.
Phase V — Ongoing care. Life rarely stands still for long. Even the most carefully constructed solutions require ongoing attention. Even if you stand still, the markets move up and down, requiring portfolio adjustments to keep your financial plan on track. Your own circumstances may evolve too, as personal relationships, careers and long-term goals shift. Such changes may warrant adjustments to your financial plan. Ongoing service also includes access to insightful performance and tax reports that offer you and your accountant more than just the typical monthly snapshot of your account activities.
“It’s not enough to be busy. The question is: What are you busy about?” — Henry David Thoreau
A well-wrought plan and ongoing strategy are essential to every prudent investor. But all the planning in the world won’t make up for poor execution. At Salzman Financial Management, LLC (SFM), proper portfolio construction and effective investment solutions play equally essential roles in our triple support strategy of advice, service and solutions.
The academics of investing. Decades of Nobel-prize-winning academic inquiry has determined that the more (or less) market risk you build into your portfolio, the higher (or lower) returns you can expect. But in an interesting twist, if you diversify across different asset classes – U.S. stocks, international stocks, bonds and real estate. — you can still pursue desirable rates of return while enjoying a slightly smoother ride.
In contrast, many investors and their high-paid brokers try to “beat the market” by picking stocks that they think may win or lose, or by predicting the essentially unpredictable fluctuations of the markets. This is known as active investing. At SFM, we believe this is counter-intuitive to the way markets really work and not expected to deliver reliable premiums. Plus, it can be very expensive.
The “you” in investing. Your personal goals determine your need to accept or avoid market risk within your own portfolio. You may choose to invest aggressively, accepting higher risk in exchange for higher expected returns. Or you may decide to invest conservatively with less growth but more stability.
We meld your needs with sensible strategy to construct The SFM Solution.
The Salzman Financial Management, LLC (SFM) Solution. SFM constructs your portfolio designed to include five asset classes, balanced to reflect the “you” in your investment strategy. Below are the most popular models, but can be customized to your personal situation. We also focus on cost control, so you can keep more of the returns you earn for yourself. We intentionally select from institutional-class fund families such as those available from Dimensional Fund Advisors, who are noted for their comparatively low-cost, tax-efficient investment strategies.
